Your Five Day Bahrain Travel Guide for What to Do & Where to Eat

After the massive success my 48 hours in Bahrain itinerary gets, and with a friend recently visiting for the first time - I developed a strong 5 day Bahrain itinerary! Giving you enough time to eat extraordinarily well, wander slowly, understand the island’s layers and still slip in a beach nap or two.

This itinerary balances culture, history, and...naturally...food.

Day 1: Start with the Story: Bahrain Fort, Museum, and Dinner at La Fontaine

Ease into the island with a morning at Qal’at al-Bahrain (Bahrain Fort). Walk the archaeological site, then pop into the Bahrain Fort Museum for context on Dilmun, trade routes and why this tiny island was once a big deal. Make sure to have a bite at GB Cafe at the Fort, quite possibly one of my favourite places to eat in Bahrain.

After sunset, head to La Fontaine…courtyard tables, candlelight, a chic Bahrain blend of art + dinner. It’s a gentle introduction to how Bahrain does culture (hint: beautifully, but never loudly). Either have a slap up meal, or order some wine and a few ‘picky bits’ to share.

Day 2: Market Morning, a Slow Lunch and the Soul of Manama

Head to Bahrain Farmers’ Market (#2 on my list when you click) (seasonal, Nov–April). Fresh herbs, local hone, the island’s vegetables laid out like a still life. Snack your way through; don’t fight it. Why not choose one of the spots there for a bite to eat. Make sure you pick up plenty of spices, pickles and chutneys to take back home. And if you’re renting a place with a kitchen, then stock up on a few items for making your meals.

Around 4/5 pm head to the The Merchant House for a sundowner on their roof. It is chic, artsy and tucked away from the chaos up there!

Then one you have had a drink or two, walk into Manama Souk. Spices, textiles, pearls and gold. Wander. Get lost. It’s part of the point.

Wrap up with dinner in the souk - I would say it is essential to have Tikka and Lamb Chops. Save my Google Maps list for where to eat in the souk (and more). Link here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/QmAx6pjUAaeaLKN27

Day 3: Kanoo House, a Historic Breakfast and a Dhow-side Dinner

Start at Kanoo House, a recently restored heritage house that has so much history. Calm, breezy, full of details you’ll want to remember. Afterwards walk to one of the souk spots for breakfast (again have a look at my google maps list to see which) and try a traditional Bahraini breakfast.

Because for dinner I am absolutely suggesting you go to the newest spot in Bahrain, Dawa.

Good to note: You can request a curatorial tour of the Kanoo Museum. Drop them a message in advance to find out timings/

Day 4: Brunch + Beach (the Holy Combination)

Commit fully to a Gulf brunch. You know the drill: it’s lavish, it’s long, it’s borderline athletic. Pick your favourite hotel or restaurant depending on your mood—laid-back, party, or the quiet elegant sort. I would suggest Bahrain Bay Kitchen at the Four Seasons for the ultimate in decadence, but if you need more suggestions send me a message.

Spend the rest of the day horizontal at the beach. Umbrella, book, dip in the water, repeat.

Good to note: brunches are either on a Friday or Saturday, so double check which in advance. Plus some allow you to use their pools after brunch, like Raffles.

Day 5: Old Muharraq + Sweet Shopping

Your final day is for Muharraq. Take a walking tour through the old neighbourhoods: the Pearling Path, restored merchant homes, narrow lanes, warm smiles.  If you want a guided tour, then drop Sophie a message. She organizes informative and curated ones for the area.

Before heading to the airport, pick up traditional sweets to take home: from halwa to baklava or more.   My favourite spot: Tariq Pastries (they have over 10+locations around Bahrain). Tell them to package it for a flight and they will know what to do.

Safe travel home!
