36 Hours of Eating in Brooklyn

Brunch: Agi’s Counter

Nestled close to the museum, Agi’s Counter was exactly what I needed, Hungarian inspired dishes with a cozy, curated menu. The spanakopita babka I had my eye on had sold out so I opted for the excellent confit tuna melt with alpine cheddar and a side of cabbage slaw. Add an egg? I was tempted, but decided not to peak too early in the day.

Tip: If you’re in the area, a walk through the Brooklyn Museum is perfect for walking off those calories to prepare for dinner 😉

Dinner: Eyval

Eyval had been on my hit list for a while as one of the new genres of contemporary Persian restaurants.

We kicked things off with komaj and barbari breads, whipped feta, and walnut herbs. All well executed and a perfect start to the meal.

The standouts? Lamb ribs with a tamarind date glaze and juicy koobideh kebabs made with wagyu beef (stealing this latter idea to try at home!)

For dessert: a saffron ice cream sandwich with rose and pistachio that was pure magic.

What I loved about Eyval is the way it maintains its Persian roots while giving the dishes a contemporary elevation. It hit that nostalgic note that had me craving my childhood flavours, but added something new and exciting. A tough line to walk, but they got it spot on.

Breakfast: Greenberg’s Bagels

No NY trip is complete without bagels, and Greenberg’s Bagels was where I was headed to, before we hit the road again.

Hand-rolled, kettle-boiled perfection. I grabbed their Brooklyn Special for the journey, made with fried egg, cheddar cheese, hashbrown, avocado, ketchup, mayo, and Mike’s Hot Honey. The busy queue of hungry shoppers? Totally justified once you taste the first bite.
