Ingredients

  • 1 Orange
  • 44 Sugar cubes
  • 44 Coffee beans
  • 1 Bottle Dark rum Alternatively, Brandy or Vodka

Notes

I'm not one to shy away from a long term food/alcohol project...pickling, steeping, chutneys (sign me up!) and this one is certainly worth it.
The liquor recipe from Normandy, appropriately called the 'quarante-quatre' (44) , calls for 44 coffee beans to be pierced into the skin of an orange, then set over 44 sugar cubes with rum, vodka or brandy poured over for 44 days (but longer for an even better flavour).
What I should end up with is a fragrantly sweet liquor with strong notes of coffee, that will give me a nice warm buzz on first sip. Santé!
