Val Gardena: Where Skiing and Gastronomy Meet

I've been fortunate to ski in many places, but it's The Dolomites that have stolen my heart. Nestled in northern Italy, these majestic mountains in the South Tyrol are a must see (I hear the summer is just as worth of a visit too). Val Gardena is made up of three 'villages' called Santa Cristina, Selva Val Gardena and Ortisei. With the latter being the largest.

Head to this incredibly beautiful part of the world for a winning combination of excellent pistes & food to match.

Where to stay:

Adler Dolomiti: Splurging? Then head to this beautiful hotel with a world-class spa, incredible breakfast spread and comfortable rooms. Situated right near the ski escalators, it is easy to head on to the mountain and off for your day of whizzing down the mountain. Here.

Dorfhotel Beludei: Located in the smaller town near Ortisei, this boutique hotel has a chic Alpine interiors, plenty of creature comforts and services to match. Here.

Where to eat:

Restaurant Tubladel: A rustic, cosy chic atmosphere welcomes diners to this charming restaurant where you can enjoy excellent dishes including deer, speck, pasta and more.

Restaurant & Bar Vives: For local Ladin food, head to this popular restaurant. We tried pasta with game meat and fermented blueberries, beef & speck dumplings as well as polenta and local sausage. Hearty and ideal after a day on the slopes.

Turonda: Why go here? For outstanding pizza in a cool, laid back and buzzy restaurant

Where to drinks:

Cercia Enoteca: A bijou wine bar with not only an excellent choice of grape but nibbles to match. Hit this spot up for an aperitivo and enjoy the people watching from their outdoor seats. Note, if it is full inside there is a champagne bar right next door!

Wine Bar Zirm: A steep climb up the mountain takes you to this sleek wine bar, which has an impressive wine collection. Make sure to check the timings and go before their dinner service starts.

The Mountain Huts:

One of the best parts of skiing in these parts is the lunches. A mountain full of 'refuges' or 'huttes', excellent and cosy restaurants that serve hearty food and drinks for your mid-day meal. From Sofie Refuge to Daniel Hut, there are plenty to try out on your visit.
